What is Counterstrain?
Counterstrain is a therapeutic, hands-on method to release pain and tension in your body’s tissues. Every organ, nerve, artery, muscle, ligament, tendon, vein, and lymphatic vessel is surrounded by fascia. This fascia can spasm as a response to injury, surgery, or illness, and remain in the spasmed condition. This causes pain and discomfort. Fascial Counterstrain is a bodywork technique that relieves fascial strain to return your body to its full range of motion.
Visualize a necklace that is full of knots. If you stretch that necklace or pound on it, you’ll do nothing but make the knots tighter. Only by gently reducing tension and allowing each knot to unfold, do you return your necklace to its normal state.
A skilled Counterstrain Practitioner takes each system of your body into consideration and gently releases the fascia. The result is improved movement, better function, and lasting pain relief.

In my daily practice, I draw upon over 30 years of bodywork to help you live a pain-free, healthy life. Specializing in Fascial Counterstrain and Somatic Emotional Release, I help people regain their natural movement, comfort, ease, and sense of well-being.
Counterstrain embraces the concepts of holistic and osteopathic medicine to address the body as a whole. The gentle technique normalizes blood flow, muscular tension, vascular drainage, and neural input by helping the body’s fascia release and return to normal. In this way, counterstrain maximizes the body’s intrinsic healing capacity.
My goal is to help people’s lives and bodies flourish!

What to expect
The Healing-Touch Counterstrain studio on Bainbridge Island
A counterstrain session is a gentle, pain-free experience that helps the body return to its natural state. I practice in my studio: a warm, comfortable, and quiet space. As you relax in comfy clothes, I’ll assess where any constrictions can be found throughout your body by finding the greatest area of constriction along your spine, then around your head. By gently manipulating your body, I’ll create slack in your fascia that will allow it to release. Sessions are usually an hour and a half.
Depending on the condition we are treating as well as the age of the injury or strain, you can expect to see results anywhere from immediately to within several sessions. More complex systems and fascial strains that have been in place for extremely long times may take more treatments.
